A bronze figure of Chairman Mao Zedong, on a Léon Follet stand — dated 1989

A bronze figure of Chairman Mao Zedong, on a Léon Follet stand — dated 1989

A finely cast bronze figure of Chairman Mao Zedong (1893–1976), founder of the People’s Republic of China and leader of the Chinese Communist Party. Mao is shown standing with his hands clasped behind his back and wearing a long overcoat — a pose symbolising authority, composure, and contemplation.

The base bears the inscription “毛主席万岁” (Mao zhuxi wansui), meaning “Long live Chairman Mao”, together with the cast date 1989.8.01 (1 August 1989) — the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA Day).

The piece is mounted on its original Léon Follet stand, indicating that it was likely produced as a commemorative or diplomatic object, celebrating Mao’s enduring symbolic connection with the army and the state.
