A Chinese coromandel lacquer four-panel folding screen with narrative and bird-and-flower scenes — 20th century

This double-sided screen is decorated in the coromandel technique, in which multiple layers of coloured lacquer are carved to reveal contrasting tones.

One side shows a courtly scene with figures set among pavilions and terraces, while the reverse features a crane, blossoming branches, and smaller birds — imagery symbolising longevity, harmony, and natural beauty.

Coromandel screens became especially popular from the 17th century onward and remained appreciated in the 20th century as decorative pieces for homes, studios, and reception rooms.

Entire screen: 183 × 165.2 cm
