A Chinese famille rose reticulated square lantern with a stand — 19th century
A Chinese famille rose reticulated square lantern with a stand — 19th century
This square lantern is decorated in the famille rose palette and distinguished by its finely reticulated construction. The openwork body and base have been carefully pierced to create an intricate geometric lattice, a technically demanding process that required both precise carving and controlled firing.
Reserved panels painted with floral sprays provide an elegant contrast to the surrounding reticulated decoration, while the vivid pink, green and turquoise enamels are characteristic of nineteenth-century famille rose wares. Combining porcelain craftsmanship with architectural design, such lanterns were intended to diffuse light through the pierced walls, creating a decorative interplay of light and shadow.
