A Chinese flambé-glazed bottle vase — 19th century
A Chinese flambé-glazed bottle vase — 19th century
This bottle vase is covered in a flambé glaze, a technique developed from copper-red glazes in which variations in kiln atmosphere and temperature create unpredictable flowing effects. As a result, each piece is unique.
The surface displays a striking combination of crimson, purple and cobalt-blue tones cascading over the pear-shaped body and slender neck. Highly valued for their dramatic and unrepeatable appearance, flambé wares became one of the most celebrated monochrome ceramics in Chinese porcelain production.
