A Chinese porcelain lidded vase depicting the ‘Hundred Boys’ Dragon Festival — Tongzhi period (1862–1874)
A Chinese porcelain lidded vase depicting the ‘Hundred Boys’ Dragon Festival — Tongzhi period (1862–1874)
In traditional China, the birth of a boy was deeply desired, as sons continued the family line and carried out ancestral rites. Because of this cultural value, scenes filled with boys became a popular decorative theme expressing hopes for a thriving household. The number “one hundred” is not literal — in Chinese symbolism it simply means “many” and conveys wishes for abundance, prosperity, and lasting family continuity.
On this vase, the boys are depicted celebrating the Dragon Festival, a lively seasonal event featuring parades with dragon figures, drums, and festive play.
