A Chinese sancai-glazed biscuit figure of a Luohan holding a ruyi — Kangxi period (1662–1722)

This biscuit-porcelain figure is decorated in a sancai glaze of green, amber, and cream over the unglazed body, while the head and hands are left matte to emphasise the modelling. The figure holds a ruyi sceptre, a traditional emblem of auspicious wishes and fulfilled intentions.

A Luohan is an enlightened disciple of the Buddha, revered for wisdom, spiritual discipline, and protective power. Figures of Luohan were commonly placed in temples and private altars as symbols of guidance and benevolent support.
