A Japanese woodblock print of an oiran in an interior — Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III, 1786–1864), Edo period

This Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III, 1786–1864) dates from the late Edo period and belongs to the phase when double censor seals were in use. These seals indicate official approval for publication and help place the print within the early 1850s production of the Utagawa school.

The signature on the print reads "Toyokuni-ga", the name Kunisada adopted after becoming the third official successor of the Utagawa school’s master title Toyokuni in 1844. Prints signed this way belong to his mature period, known for refined colour palettes and elegant bijin-ga style.

The print has not been opened or examined outside the frame.
