A large Chinese porcelain vase with landscape decoration and moulded bat handles — 20th century
A large Chinese porcelain vase with landscape decoration and moulded bat handles — 20th century
This large porcelain vase is decorated with an extensive hand-painted landscape of mountains, pines and rivers, executed in a refined soft-enamel palette. The upper and lower sections are finished in a pale bluish-green glaze that frames the central scene, while the two moulded bat handles in iron-red and gilt add a traditional decorative element. In Chinese art the bat (蝙蝠, bianfu) is an auspicious motif associated with good fortune, and its use here complements the serene pictorial composition typical of 20th-century decorative porcelains.
A small poetic inscription with an accompanying seal is applied to one side of the landscape.
